Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get the audio feedback to work?

First of all you need the full version.

Secondly, you may not have the text-to-speech data installed, but that is an easy fix. Just go into Settings > Voice input and output > Text-to-speach settings, and install it according to instructions there. Works for most users after that.

why are my playlists not showing on Samsung Galaxy S2?

It seems that Galaxy S2 has it's own version of the music player, which does not store playlists where the original Android Music playes does. Or any other music player for that matter. We are investigating, and have asked Samsung for clarification on this issue, but without response.

In the mean time, what most users have found useful, is to use some other music player to organize the playlists, e.g. WinAmp. So, please download a player and create a playlist to work around the Samsung music player problem.

how to i upgrade and move workouts from free to the full version?

Simple;

  1. In runstar™ free you go into Settings and press 'backup'.
  2. In runstar™ (full version) you go into Settings and press 'restore'.

    What happens is that runstar™ FREE copies all workouts to the external memory card, and runstar™ full version loads those workouts. PLEASE NOTE - when restoring workouts to the full version, all existing workouts in that app will be deleted. This means if you used the full version for running before moving from runstar™ FREE, those will be deleted. So, don't wait, move workouts right away.

    this version of runstar was not purchased through Android Market

    There could be many reasons for this message. If you indeed have bought you runstar via Android Market then try;

    1. Wait a bit and see if it works. It could be an internet connectivity issue.
    2. Restart the phone. This has been know to solve it for a few people.

      what do i need to use the runstar™ application?

      The runstar™ FREE application runs on the Android platform. It needs at least Android 1.5 (which means most devices on the market), and is made for all types of screens;

      • QVGA (240x320)
      • HVGA (320x480)
      • WVGA (800 to 854 x 480)

      Or put another way - this means we run on virtually all Android devices.

      why does runstar™ not show up in android market

      It will not show up in Android Market if you have Android 1.1. Otherwise it should show up on all other devices.

      But if it still doesn't, please send us an email and we'll try investigate it further.

      why am i not getting any gps signal?

      runstar™ does not have any control over the accuracy or time needed to find your location, instead runstar™ just reads the coordinates it is given from the phone. Sometimes it takes a while for the phone to find your location, which is out of runstar™'s control, but we have a few tips and tricks to make it easier getting the GPS to work well:

      • The gps works better when there it can get a clear signal from the sky, i.e. when the sky is clear, no tall trees or buildings around and not carry it in an inner pocket.
      • The gps gets it's start position faster if being still.
      • If the gps just won't get your location, restarting the entire phone have been known to help

      why is the app reporting the wrong distance?

      Depending on external factors, the GPS sometimes gets weird coordinates from time to time (as discussed in "why am i not getting any GPS signal?" above). When this happens we filter out the bad ones and keep the good ones. Major improvements to this filtering was done in version 0.8.0 of the Android client. Please let us know if you still experience problems in this area.

      Also, if you use the option "start without GPS", then the application will only start recording both *duration* and *distance* from the tie it gets its first coordinate. This means that the first part of your run is lost if you use that option.

      why do i have to login with an existing account?

      We think that the amount of different logins + passwords a normal person has to remember today is crazy. So we decided to make things easier for you (and us) by reusing an account you already have with Google, Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, AOL or OpenId. If you don't have an account with those providers already we recommend getting an OpenId from the provider myOpenID (http://www.myopenid.com/).

      The only information we use from your profile is to automatically fill in your runstar™ profile with your full name, a username and your email. However, you can remove the full name and email if you want, but a username is needed for e.g. links. your email will never be shared with anyone outside the team working at runstar™, and will never be used for spamming with ads. We promise.

      why is your Android app so very iPhone-ish?

      We want a good looking and useful design, so we take the best interaction ideas and graphical elements we know and use them together. This way we are not just Android-ish, iPhone-ish or Palm Pre-ish, just plain style-ish.

      what to you mean with "usage statistics"?

      We collect data from the runstar™ application (no information from the rest of the phone us used) to help us make smart development decision. For example, we collect data on how much certain features are used, and that way we know if we should put more effort into popular stuff, and discontinue others. So, in the end, this data collection will help us make better stuff for you.

      The data we collect are used by the runstar™ team only, and is not shared with anyone else.

      how do i delete a workout?

      In the detailed view of a workout, you can scroll down and there you will find a delete button.

      how do i export data?

      We do not want to lock in your data. At the moment you can't export from the phone. But soon you will be able to upload your data to our servers, and from there export to a common format.

      why does the app sometimes just crash?

      We do our best to fix all problems we know of, especially crashes. perhaps you found a problem we don't know about? Please send us an email and let us know how it happened. we'll take care of it as fast as we can! thanks.

      The best way to help us is to send the Android log. In this log your phone keeps information on what happened in the last 5 minutes (can be more or less). If you want to send the log to us you need to;

      1. Download Log Collector from Android Market.
      2. Use runstar in the way that produces the crash.
      3. Immediately after the crash or problem, open Log Collector and send it as an email to support@runstar.se
      We will use that log for debug purposes, and nothing else. It's a promise!
